The Alphabet Game – Road Trip
Most people have their version of the Alphabet Game. There are several to choose from and each has it’s own challenges that makes the fun last. This is one for the road!
My children love this game, especially for long trips.
As you start your trip, everyone looks for a word that begin with the letter “A”. It can be on a sign, an 18 wheeler, a passing car, etc. It cannot be inside your car and it needs to be a word spelled out (not an object that starts with an “A”.
Example: “A” – You pass a car with Alabama license plate. “Alabama” is your “A”.
You cannot move onto the next letter until the letter you are currently on is found.
Example: You are looking for a “D” and you pass a “Food Lion” Truck. You cannot use the “F” in Food or the “L” in Lion as two words needed.
If you find a letter you need and that letter stands for a word, you can use it.
Example: You are on the letter “X”. You pass a railroad crossing marked with the letter “X”. You can use the crossing “X” as you “X” because it stands for “Crossing”.
The word does not have to be spelled correctly to count as long as it clearly stands for a word.
Example: Again concerning the letter “X”. If you see an “Xtra” truck, the “X” counts because it clearly spells out the word “extra”. However, the word “Exxon” would be an “E” word even though the “E” is silent.
VARIATIONS:
1. You can bend the rules to include things you see like if you are looking for a “C”, and you pass a car, you can use the “Car” for your “C”. A building could be a “B” or if it is a store, you could use it for your “S”.
2. Put a twist on the game. Instead of going in order, start with “Z” and work back to “A”.
3. Another fun twist is to start with “A” and the next letter is the last letter of the first item. So if your first word was “Aflac” from a billboard sign, the next word would begin with “C”.
* Mix it up if you’re taking a long trip. The more variations, the longer it will hold your families attention.
