Home Safety
Getting your children to help you make your home safe makes them feel important while teaching them about safety. By being a part of the process, they will remember the safety checklist more.
CHECKLIST:
1. Check to see if the electrical extension cords are stretched across the any pathways. If there are cords, be sure to tape them securely to the floor and cover with a secure rug.
2. Check to make sure the electrical cords are in good working condition.
3. Check for any items with lead paint, remove those items from your home.
4. Be sure your screens are secure on all windows and doors.
5. Cover all unused outlets. If there are small children in your home, make sure to cover the used outlets with the protective covers.
6. Make sure all floor coverings are securely fastened down.
7. Make sure all floor surfaces are non-skid.
8. Check all electrical outlets for overloading.
9. Make sure all fireplaces are screened and protected.
10. Do you have enough fire extinguishers, conveniently located and where everyone knows how to find and use them? You need at least one fire extinguisher per floor of your house.
11. Are all of your smoke detectors working and do you have enough of them for your house? Be sure to keep a check on your batteries as well.
12. Keep all of the open flamed items (such as candles) away from walls and curtains or other flammable items.
13. Do the adults all know how to turn off the gas and electricity in a case of an emergency?
14. Do all interior doors (like closets) have safety releases that allow them to be opened from inside and out?
15. Are emergency numbers clearly posted where everyone can use them in cases of emergency?
16. Make sure your water heater is turned down to a temperature that will not cause burning if a small child should turn on the water.
* The best way to keep your family safe is to educate them about safety.
